James worked for many years  producing print and digital media content for national and regional news and editorial outlets. Those assignments taught him to work in all kinds of environments, on tight deadlines, making photographs that brought stories to life and captured the unique personalities of the people in them. Those experiences developed the skills that lead to work with corporate and commercial clients creating photographs and documentary video for communications, marketing, and branding.

His outstanding photography and storytelling skills have been recognized with several awards. In 2013 he won first place for a photo story in the "Clubs/Night Life" category of PDN Magazine's “The Scene” photo contest,  The Illinois College Press Association awarded him first place for a feature photo in 2012, also in 2012 he was awarded a first place prize for photo illustration by The Society of Professional Journalists, he shared that award with creative director Heidi Unkefer.

James holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in photography from Columbia College, Chicago, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre performance from SUNY Purchase College, New York, and he is a graduate of the Interlochen Academy of the Arts in Michigan.

At the heart of his process is connecting to the people he works with; helping them to relax and be the best version of themselves in front of the camera.

Photography is an Art with many ingredients mixed in: vision, creativity, passion, compassion, self-discipline, zeal for life and other people, pure talent and much more.

Thus it is truly a joy when one knows a photojournalist who captures the above. James Foster can be said to be such a person.

James Foster's work is fantastic. I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. He draws on his wealth of experience in theater and photography to offer helpful tips and suggestions, while always mindful of the client's needs. I only wish breaking into acting was as fun and easy as working with James.
